Bio-Diversity Preservation

While there may still be skeptics about global warming, nobody denies that mass deforestation of our tropical rainforests is happening on a global scale and at an unprecedented rate. Every year, the world loses 15 million hectares/150,000 km2 (33 million acres/90,000 square miles) of forest lands. This loss contributes to over 100 million tonnes of carbon output, the single largest contributor of anthropomorphic (human caused) green house gases.

The ancient Tropical Peat Swamp Forests of Borneo not only store the world’s highest densities of carbon but also host some of the world's most bio-diverse habitats, with as many as 1000 plant and animal species per square kilometer. The Rimba Raya Reserve protects 500 square kilometers of these rare forests and provides a patrolled buffer zone between the Tanjung Putting National Park and the encroaching palm oil industry.

Endangered Wildlife Habitat Conservation

The Tropical Peat Swamp Forests of Borneo is one of the few remaining habitats of the endangered orangutan. Due to a relatively high availability of food in Tropical Peat Swamp Forests, wild orangutan populations can average 2-3 individuals per km2, compared to 1 individual or less for other types of forests. There are as few as 30,000 Orangutans left in the wild. Both the Bornean and the Sumatran Orangutans are listed on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species.

InfiniteEARTH's Rimba Raya Reserve provides a viable natural habitat for more than 1000 wild or rehabilitated orangutans.

Sustainable Economic Development Opportunities for Indigenous Communities

For centuries, indigenous communities have been stripped of their land-use rights and have seldom benefited from the extraction of natural resources from their ancestral lands. Through the contributions of InfiniteEARTH, indigenous communities inhabiting the forests around the Rimba Raya Reserve now share in the proceeds of the carbon credits generated from the on-going protection of the forest.

Rimba Raya Reserve has launched a number of programs staffed by local villagers including: a clinic, a school, a Park & Fire Ranger Service, an Eco-Tourism Guide Service, and expansion of the Orangutan Rehabilitation & Release Center. The Reserve supports four local communities, enabling them to pursue a traditional and sustainable lifestyle, while also significantly improving their standard of living.
